For many people, the first thing they think of when someone mentions a pet trust is Leona Helmsey. Also known as the “Queen of Mean” she created a $12M pet trust for her Maltese Trouble while completely cutting out other members of her family.

While this makes for great headlines, for the vast majority of us, this is not the type of pet trust we are creating. A trust for your pets is really about creating a plan for them if you can no longer care for them. We have all seen the posts on social media for dogs or cats in need of a home because the owner had “passed away” or was “moving to a home.” Pets are cherished members of our families and it is important to consider what happens to them if something happens to you.

A pet trust can be as complicated as $12 million dollars wherein the trustee can purchase a house and provide for every whim of your pet. A pet trust can simply be a few thousand dollars to ensure that your animal is cared for. We can even help you simply get your wishes down on paper without a trust.

Our animals might just be a small part of your life, but to them, we are their whole life. You owe it to your pet to have a plan.
